The Spirit of Giving

Can we really ever give to another without giving to ourselves as well? Perhaps “service to others” inherently includes “service to self.”

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” – Gandhi

As I sat to write this post, I connected with my Divine Team and asked via the Ask Your Guides oracle cards to please guide me in what I could say about the spirit of giving.

I shuffled, cut, and randomly drew the most perfect card one could receive: Balance…see it for yourself!

You have to love, love, love these types of synchronicities, especially during times when it may seem all is lost and you feel like throwing in the towel.

Just when you need it most, Love comes calling, gifting you with an image of two figures exchanging (giving and receiving) gifts, in a balanced way!

The Divine Teachers’ message at the end of the description for this card says:

“There’s no difference between giving and receiving love.”

That’s an intriguing statement, and so I pondered it.

The balanced flow of give and take in our interactions with others is perhaps one of the greatest understandings we came here to learn.

  • Do we give in expectation that we may receive in equal measure?
  • Do we withhold so that we may give ourselves power over another?
  • Do we believe we can ever give selflessly without getting something in return?

“We rise by lifting others” – Robert Ingersoll

When we give to another–whether it be a material good, assistance in the form of our physical presence, or love in the form of our devotion–we are, in fact, giving to ourselves at the same time.

“Hold on,” you might say, “I’ve given selflessly to another with no expectation of receiving anything in return.”

Not even to feel good within ourselves for our largesse?

Not even to bolster our self-esteem in seeing ourselves as a kind-hearted person?

Not even to ensure we can reap some good karma sometime in the future?

Not even to assuage a sense of guilt if we don’t give of our time, resources, or love?

When we give to another, we always give to ourselves as well. Even if it’s not an obvious result for our benefit, we can’t get around it.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. It just is what is. It’s actually a win-win; a spiritual BOGO, if you will!

Look at the card image again: both givers/recipients are held by the same Greater Being.

Perhaps experiencing giving and receiving at the human level is Spirit’s way of surprising Itself?

One hand plays the role of benevolence and the other, of gratitude; then vice versa.

Give and take…offer and accept…bestow and receive…all in Divine balance.
